The Desks of the Vanity Fair Team

March 18, 2013 11:41 AM

In the spirit of their regular “My Desk” feature, the Vanity Fair team turned the cameras on their own work spaces for this series.

While the office furniture at the Condé Nast publication is as standard issue as anywhere, the infusion of personal memorabilia, books, flowers and the odd Fendi bear or toile backdrop make these spaces  beautiful and interesting, so take inspiration from the images and the stories behind them.

Kathryn Macleod
Senior Photography Producer

“Framed photos of MacLeod’s many years of work with Annie Leibovitz surround her desk area, including a behind-the-scenes snap from a shoot of Kathy Bates for the 2003 Hollywood Issue. The purple bracelets dangling around the bottle of champagne are Rockstar Ronan bracelets, also a favorite accessory of V.F. cover girl Taylor Swift, whose song 'Ronan' was inspired by the blog of Macleod’s friend Maya Thompson.”

“Flowers and another Annie snapshot (this time of MacLeod and Bono) occupy the area by her computer.”

Sunhee Grinnell
Beauty Director

“Among the stacks of products Grinnell tests and the fresh-cut flowers, just visible behind her monitor is a photo of her with her son Roman, taken by Davis Factor.”

Wayne Lawson
Executive Literary Editor

“High atop the bound copies of past issues, Lawson hides an asme award for general excellence. To the right, a Massoud clock given to him by a friend of one of his writers’, Marie Brenner.”

Susan White
Photography Director

“White uses more than a dozen well-placed clips to keep apace of all the magazine’s ongoing and planned photo assignments.”

Jessica Diehl
Fashion and Style Director

“The flowers are from various admirers, including some roses from her assistant to welcome her back from Paris Fashion Week. The color print on the wall is a David LaChapelle photograph of Alexander McQueen and Isabella Blow.”

“A collection of some more of Diehl’s favorite photos, including an image from the magazine of Lady Gaga, shot by Nick Knight, and a shot of theVanity Fair fashion team by Justin Bishop.”

Punch Hutton
Deputy Editor

“A collection of Punch’s favorite photos graces her corkboard. In the top left, Hunter Thompson in Big Sur, which she loves “because he looks so free.” Fanfair, the section of the magazine Hutton edits, is represented by her favorite opening spread, a photo of Marcello Mastroianni taken during the Cannes Film Festival in 1974.”

John Banta
Research Director

“Banta, once the research editor at This Old House magazine, keeps a collection of vintage tools at his desk—one of which (the steel piece with the curved handle), the photographer was quick to point out, would make a great submission to the magazine’s 'What is it?' feature.”

David Friend
Editor of Creative Development

“ 'My office—in disarray because of my current work on Vanity Fair’s 100th-anniversary book—visually expresses the fact that I am both anal compulsive AND anal expulsive.' ”

Sarah Ball
Deputy Digital Editor

“Ball keeps a postcard of a 1930s cover, a Duke basketball ticket, and a lifetime supply of red pencils against a fox-hunting toile at her desk.”

Michael Carl
Fashion Market Director

“The Fendi bear, whose brother reportedly lives with Kanye West, just showed up at Carl’s office one day. His name is Kevin.”
