Best Canada Day Outfit Ever: What Kate’s Wearing and Why the Royals Do it Best

Kate Middleton's outfit on Canada Day

The world’s latest fashion icon and obsession, The Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton, has paid wonderful tribute to Canada in Ottawa today by wearing the best Canada Day outfit ever.

That’s her white Reiss “Nannette” dress, which you’ll recall from the couple’s Mario Testino engagement photos (below), red pumps, an Anya Hindmarch clutch and The Queen’s maple leaf brooch, worn last year in Ottawa in her own fabulous red and white tribute outfit as well as on her first trip to Canada in 1951. The pièce de résistance – and an instant piece of Canadian fashion history –  is a red maple leaf fascinator by Sylvia Fletcher at Lock & Co.

Let this be a lesson in personal branding through fashion to us all from the people who do it best. The Royals know better than anyone the power of an outfit to win the hearts and minds of a nation. Think Elizabeth I as the Virgin Queen, dressing as the “bride” of England.

Repeating an already well-remarked dress (the Reiss dress has been hugely covered by the media since Kate wore it in her engagement photos, not to mention totally sold out) is another smart strategy, one which Michelle Obama has also employed during her time as First Lady, that demonstrates frugality and sensibility. It makes the women more relatable and prevents tax payers from feeling like they’re paying for the extravagances of their leaders, à la Marie Antoinette and Sarah Palin.

Here’s how to follow every move of the Royal Visit, including Kate’s fashion choices.
