Power Dressing: The Hermès Scarf (Win it!)

May 12, 2011 8:37 AM

Woven from the silk of 250 mulberry moth cocoons and hand printed using multiple silk screens, the Hermès square silk scarf was originally introduced to the 174-year old luxury label in 1937 and remains one of THE ultimate high fashion power items.

We love the history of the brand – a family business that grew slowly but steadily as each generation added innovation while preserving the company’s core values, eventually putting them all on the Forbes billionaire list. We love to see the scarves on the likes of Grace Kelly, Queen Elizabeth II, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and Madonna. We love the J’aime Mon Carré campaign that re-styles the scarves from a stuffier ladies-who-lunch appendage to  a modern girl-on-the-go must.

But most of all, we love that we just got one. And we got one for you too.

With Empirella style writer, Jacquie Lee, I braved the 6:30 a.m. lineup at the bi-annual Hermès silk sale in Toronto in support of St. Michael’s Hospital and made a cutthroat dash for the best colors and designs. We each got an Hermès Sellier Square 90 x 90 Silk Scarf in our color of choice and one to give away here in celebration of our launch.

WIN it by liking our Facebook page. You can double your chances by commenting on this post. The scarf is valued at approximately $375. You need and deserve to have this scarf in your wardrobe, so we wish you the best of luck. We’ll choose a winner at random on Friday, May 27th.

Me and Jacquie Lee in our favorite new accessories.

Beautiful classic scarf – would be a great addition to my collection (which currently doesn’t include any Hermes) :(

Lovely post! Agreed with Phyl, a silk carre (keyboard is an Anglophone too!) can really make an outfit and is so versatile!

When I went to Europe last summer I was envious of all of the scarf wearing happening around me that I purchased one in Milan and Amsterdam. This would make a F-A-B-U-L-O-U-S addition to my collection.

When I was 21 (a rather long time ago) I worked in Yorkville, the most sophisticated place of work I have ever known. The shop I worked in sold Hermes’ “Caleche” perfume. I was a universe. Every time I caught a whiff I transcended to a completely known personal world with deep green grass, leather saddles on shiny chestnut horses, windy fields, wood panelled country homes and friendly people wearing silky colours with rosy cheeks. I can still put myself back there.

A Hermes Scarf is Classic…and a must have staple for every woman, just like the little black dress in the closet. Congrats on launching a great site. I am looking forward to being inspired with Empirella!
